The traction grade is based on braking (straight-
ahead)tractiontestsanddoesnotincludecornering
(turning)performance.
Thetemperaturegradeisestablishedforatirethatis
properly inflated and not overloaded. Excessive
speed, underinflation, or excessive loading, either
separatelyorincombination,cancauseheatbuildup
andpossibletirefailure.
TemperatureGrades
ThetemperaturegradesareA(highest),B,andC,repre-
sentingthetire’sresistancetothegenerationofheatand
itsabilitytodissipateheatwhentestedundercontrolled
conditions on a specified indoor laboratory test wheel.
Sustainedhightemperaturecancausethematerialofthe
tire to degenerate and reduce tire life, and excessive
temperaturecanleadtosuddentirefailure.ThegradeC
correspondstoalevelofperformancewhichallpassen-
gercartiresmustmeetundertheFederalMotorVehicle
Safety Standard No. 109. Grades B and A represent
higherlevelsofperformanceonthelaboratorytestwheel
thantheminimumrequiredbylaw.
