CAUTION!
CAUTION!
Damage to the fuel system or emission  control
systemcouldresultfromusinganimproperfuelcap
(gas cap). A poorly fitting cap could let impurities
into the fuel system. Also, a poorly fitting after-
marketcapcancausetheMIL(MalfunctionIndica-
torLight)toilluminate,duetofuelvaporsescaping
fromthesystem.
To avoid fuel spillage and overfilling, do not “top
off”thefueltankafterfilling.
NOTE: When the fuel nozzle “clicks” or shuts off, the
fueltankisfull.
LooseFuelFillerCapMessage
Ifthevehiclediagnosticsystemdeterminesthatthefuel
filler cap is loose, improperly installed, or damaged, a
“CHECK GAS CAP” message will be displayed in the
EVIC (Electronic Vehicle Information Center). Refer to
“Electronic Vehicle Information Center” in Section 4 of
thismanual.Tightenthefuelfillercapproperlyandpress
theodometerresetbuttontoturnthemessageoff.Ifthe
problemcontinues,themessagewillappearthenexttime
the vehicle is started. Refer to “Onboard Diagnostic
System — OBDII” in Section 7 of this manual for more
information.
Turntheengineoff.
Rotatethefuelcaptothelefttoremove.
To replace the cap, insert it into the filler neck and
tightenthecapabout1/4turnuntilyouhearoneclick.
Thisisanindicationthatthecapisproperlytightened.
Makesurethatthefuelcaptetherstrapisnotcaught
underthefuelcap.
