Howdoesthesideairbagsystemwork?
Thedesignanddevelopmentofthesideairbagsystemincluded
recommendedtestingproceduresthatweredevelopedbyagroupof
automotivesafetyexpertsknownastheSideAirbagTechnicalWorking
Group.Theserecommendedtestingprocedureshelpreducetheriskof
injuriesrelatedtothedeploymentofsideairbags(includingsideair
curtainsystems).
Thesideairbagsystemconsistsof
thefollowing:

Aninflatablenylonbag(airbag)
withagasgeneratorconcealed
behindtheoutboardbolsterof
thedriverandfrontpassenger
seatbacks.

Thesamewarninglight,
electroniccontrolanddiagnostic
unitasusedforthefrontairbags.
Twocrashsensorslocatedundertheoutboardsideofthefrontseats,
attachednearthefloor.
Sideairbags,incombinationwithsafetybelts,canhelpreducetheriskof
severeinjuriesintheeventofasignificantsideimpactcollision.
Thesideairbagsarefittedontheoutboardsideoftheseatbacksofthe
frontseats.Incertainlateralcollisions,theairbagonthesideaffectedby
thecollisionwillbeinflated,eveniftherespectiveseatisnotoccupied.
Theairbagwasdesignedtoinflatebetweenthedoorpanelandoccupant
tofurtherenhancetheprotectionprovidedoccupantsinsideimpact
collisions.
TheairbagSRSisdesignedtoactivatewhenthevehiclesustainslateral
decelerationsufficienttocausethesensorstocloseanelectricalcircuit
thatinitiatesairbaginflation.
