Thesideaircurtainsaremountedtothesheetmetalabovethefirstand
secondrowseats.Incertainlateralcollisions,theaircurtainand
seat-mountedsideairbagonthesideaffectedbythecollisionwillbe
inflated,eveniftherespectiveseatisnotoccupied.Theaircurtainwas
designedtoinflatebetweenthesidewindowareaandoccupantto
furtherenhancetheheadprotectionprovidedtooccupantsinside
impactcollisions.Theseat-mountedsideairbagwasdesignedtoinflate
betweenthedoorpanelandoccupanttofurtherenhancetheprotection
providedoccupantsinsideimpactcollision.
ThesideaircurtainsystemSRSisdesignedtoactivatewhenthevehicle
sustainslateraldecelerationsufficienttocausethesensorstoclosean
electricalcircuitthatinitiatesaircurtainandseat-mountedsideairbag
inflation.
Thefactthatthesideaircurtainandseat-mountedsideairbagdidnot
inflateinacollisiondoesnotmeanthatsomethingiswrongwiththe
system.Rather,itmeanstheforceswerenotofthetypesufficientto
causeactivation.Thesideaircurtainsystemisdesignedtoinflateinside
impactcollisions,notroll-over,rearimpact,frontalornear-frontal
collisions,unlessthecollisioncausessufficientlateraldeceleration.
Severalairbagsystemcomponentsgethotafterinflation.Donot
touchthemafterinflation.
Ifthesideaircurtainhas
deployed,theaircurtain
willnotfunctionagain.The
sideaircurtainsystem
(includingtheA,BandC
pillartrimandheadliner)must
beinspectedandservicedby
anauthorizeddealer.Iftheair
curtainisnotreplaced,the
unrepairedareawillincreasethe
riskofinjuryinacollision.
Determiningifthesystemisoperational
TheSRSusesareadinesslightintheinstrumentclusteroratoneto
indicatetheconditionofthesystem.RefertotheAirbagreadiness
sectionintheInstrumentclusterchapter.Routinemaintenanceofthe
airbagisnotrequired.
