Improperorinadequatevehiclemaintenancecancausetirestowear
abnormally.Inspectallyourtires,includingthespare,frequently,and
replacethemifoneormoreofthefollowingconditionsexist:
Tire wear
Whenthetreadisworndownto
1/16th
ofaninch(2mm),tiresmust
bereplacedtohelppreventyour
vehiclefromskiddingand
hydroplaning.Built-intreadwear
indicators,or“wearbars”,which
looklikenarrowstripsofsmooth
rubberacrossthetreadwillappear
onthetirewhenthetreadisworn
downto1/16thofaninch(2mm).
Whenthetiretreadwearsdownto
thesameheightasthese“wearbars”,thetireiswornoutandmustbe
replaced.
Damage
Periodicallyinspectthetiretreadsandsidewallsfordamage(suchas
bulgesinthetreadorsidewalls,cracksinthetreadgrooveandseparation
inthetreadorsidewall).Ifdamageisobservedorsuspectedhavethetire
inspectedbyatireprofessional.Tirescanbedamagedduringoff-road
use,soinspectionafteroff-roaduseisalsorecommended.
Age
Tiresdegradeovertime,evenwhentheyarenotbeingused.Itis
recommendedthattiresgenerallybereplacedafter6yearsofnormal
service.Heatcausedbyhotclimatesorfrequenthighloading
conditionscanacceleratetheagingprocess.Youshouldreplacethe
sparetirewhenyoureplacetheotherroadtiresduetotheagingof
thesparetire.
U.S. DOT Tire Identification Number (TIN)
U.S.andCanadaFederalregulationsrequiretiremanufacturerstoplace
standardizedinformationonthesidewallofalltires.Thisinformation
identifiesanddescribesthefundamentalcharacteristicsofthetireand
alsoprovidesaU.S.DOTTireIdentificationNumberforsafetystandard
certificationandincaseofarecall.
