On board diagnostics (OBD-II)
Yourvehicleisequippedwithacomputerthatmonitorstheengine’s
emissioncontrolsystem.ThissystemiscommonlyknownastheOnBoard
DiagnosticsSystem(OBD-II).ThisOBD-IIsystemprotectstheenvironment
byensuringthatyourvehiclecontinuestomeetgovernmentemission
standards.TheOBD-IIsystemalsoassiststheservicetechnicianin
properlyservicingyourvehicle.Whenthe
OBD-IIsystemhasdetectedamalfunction.Temporarymalfunctionsmay
causeyour lighttoilluminate.Examplesare:

Thevehiclehasrunoutoffuel.(Theenginemaymisfireorrunpoorly.)
Poorfuelqualityorwaterinthefuel.
Thefuelcapmaynothavebeensecurelytightened.
Thesetemporarymalfunctionscanbecorrectedbyfillingthefueltank
withgoodqualityfueland/orproperlytighteningthefuelcap.Afterthree
drivingcycleswithouttheseoranyothertemporarymalfunctions
present,the
lightshouldturnoff.(Adrivingcycleconsistsofa
coldenginestartupfollowedbymixedcity/highwaydriving.)No
additionalvehicleserviceisrequired.
Ifthe
lightremainson,haveyourvehicleservicedatthefirst
availableopportunity.
Readiness for Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) testing
Insomelocalities,itmaybealegalrequirementtopassanI/Mtestof
theon-boarddiagnosticssystem.Ifyour
lightison,refertothe
descriptionintheWarninglightsandchimessectionofthe
InstrumentClusterchapter.YourvehiclemaynotpasstheI/Mtestwith
the
lighton.
Ifthevehicle’spowertrainsystemoritsbatteryhasjustbeenserviced,
theon-boarddiagnosticssystemisresettoa“notreadyforI/Mtest”
condition.Toreadytheon-boarddiagnosticssystemforI/Mtesting,a
minimumof30minutesofcityandhighwaydrivingisnecessaryas
describedbelow:

First,atleast10minutesofdrivingonanexpresswayorhighway.
Next,atleast20minutesdrivinginstop-and-go,city-typetrafficwith
atleastfouridleperiods.
