isabouttolockup,theABSrespondsby
automaticallyreleasingandreapplying
thatwheel'sbrake.
Thedriverwillfeelaslightvibrationin
thebrakepedalandmayhearachattering
noisefromthebrakesystem.Thisis
normalwhentheABSoperates.Don't
pumpthebrakes,continuetopressdown
onthebrakepedal.
Thewarninglightstaysonforafew
secondswhentheignitionswitchisturned
totheONposition.
IftheABSwarninglightstaysonwhile
you'redriving,theABScontrolunithas
detectedasystemmalfunction.Ifthis
occurs,yourbrakeswillfunctionnormally
asifthevehiclehadnoABS.
WARNING
DonotrelyonABSasasubstitutefor
safedriving:
TheABScannotcompensatefor
unsafeandrecklessdriving,excessive
speed,tailgating(followinganother
vehicletooclosely),drivingoniceand
snow,andhydroplaning(reducedtire
frictionandroadcontactbecauseof
waterontheroadsurface).Youcan
stillhaveanaccident.
Shouldthishappen,consultanAuthorized
MazdaDealerassoonaspossible.
NOTE
Whentheengineisjump-startedtochargethe
battery,unevenrpmoccursandtheABS
warninglightcomeson.Thisisduetoaweak
battery,notamalfunction.
Rechargethebattery.
NOTE
Brakingdistancesmaybelongeronloose

surfaces(snoworgravel,forexample)
whichusuallyhaveahardfoundation.A
vehiclewithanormalbrakingsystemmay
requirelessdistancetostopunderthese
conditionsbecausethetireswillbuildupa
wedgeofsurfacelayerwhenthewheels
skid.
ThesoundoftheABSoperatingmaybe

heardwhenstartingtheengineor
immediatelyafterstartingthevehicle.
However,itdoesnotindicateamalfunction.
