“D”(Overdrive)
This range is used when the vehicle is standing for Thisrangeisusedformostcityandhighwaydriving.It
prolongedperiodswiththeenginerunning.Theengine providesthesmoothestupshiftsanddownshiftsandthe
maybestartedinthisrange.Settheparkingbrakeifyou best fuel economy. Select the “3” range when frequent
mustleavethevehicle.
transmission shifting occurs when using the Overdrive
range, such as when operating the vehicle under heavy
loadingconditions(inhillyterrain,travelingintostrong
headwinds,orwhiletowingheavytrailers).
CAUTION!
Coastingthevehicleordrivingforanyotherreason
withshiftleverinNEUTRALcanresultintransmis-
siondamage.
NOTE:
• IfOverdrivethevehiclemayisstartedbe delayed.incoldNormaltemperatures,Overdriveshiftsintoand

shiftingoperationwillresumewhenthetemperature
of the transmission reaches the appropriate tempera-
ture. Refer to the “Note” under “Torque Converter
Clutch”laterinthissection.
WARNING!
Do not coast in NEUTRAL and never turn off the
ignition to coast down a hill. These are unsafe
practicesthatlimityourresponsetochangingtraffic
or road conditions. You might lose control of the
vehicleandhaveanaccident.
