Thedesignanddevelopmentofthe
sideairbagsystemincluded
recommendedtestingprocedures
thatweredevelopedbyagroupof
automotivesafetyexpertsknownas
theSideAirbagTechnicalWorking
Group.Theserecommendedtesting
procedureshelpreducetheriskof
injuriesrelatedtothedeploymentof
sideairbags.
Thesideairbagsystemconsistsof
thefollowing:
Aninflatablebag(airbag)witha
gasgeneratorconcealedbehind
theoutboardbolsterofthedriver
andfrontpassengerseatbacks.
Aspecialseatcoverdesignedto
allowairbagdeployment.
Thesamewarninglight,electroniccontrolanddiagnosticunitasused
forthefrontairbags.
Twopressuresensorslocatedinthefrontdoors.
Twocrashsensorslocatedbetweenthe“B”and“C”pillars.
Sideairbags,incombinationwithsafetybelts,canhelpreducetheriskof
severeinjuriesintheeventofasignificantsideimpactcollision.
Thesideairbagsarefittedontheoutboardsideoftheseatbacksofthe
frontseats.Incertainlateralcollisions,theairbagonthesideaffectedby
thecollisionwillbeinflated.Theairbagwasdesignedtoinflatebetween
thedoorpanelandoccupanttofurtherenhancetheprotectionprovided
occupantsinsideimpactcollisions.
TheairbagSRSisdesignedtoactivatewhenthevehiclesustainslateral
decelerationsufficienttocausethesensorstocloseanelectricalcircuit
thatinitiatesairbaginflation.
Thefactthattheairbagsdidnotinflateinacollisiondoesnotmeanthat
somethingiswrongwiththesystem.Rather,itmeanstheforceswere
notofthetypesufficienttocauseactivation.Sideairbagsaredesigned
toinflateinside-impactcollisions,notroll-over,rear-impact,frontalor
near-frontalcollisions,unlessthecollisioncausessufficientlateral
deceleration.
