Seating and Safety Restraints
Thefrontpassengersensingsystemcanautomaticallyturnoffthe
passengerfrontairbag.Thesystemisdesignedtohelpprotectsmall
(childsize)occupantsfromairbagdeploymentswhentheyare
improperlyseatedorrestrainedinthefrontpassengerseatcontraryto
properchild-seatingorrestraintusagerecommendations.Evenwiththis
technology,parentsareSTRONGLYencouragedtoalwaysproperly
restrainchildrenintherearseat.Thesensoralsoturnsofftheairbag
whenthepassengerseatisemptytopreventunnecessaryreplacementof
theairbag(s)afteracollision.
Whenthefrontpassengerseatisoccupiedandthesensingsystemhas
turnedoffthepassenger’sfrontalairbag,the“passairbagoff”indicator
willlightandstaylittoremindyouthatthefrontpassengerfrontal
airbagisoff.SeeFrontpassengersensingsystemintheAirbag
supplementalrestraints(SRS)sectionofthischapter.
Frontsafetybeltusagesensors
Thefrontsafetybeltusagesensorsdetectwhetherornotthedriverand
frontoutboardpassengersafetybeltsarefastened.Thisinformation
allowsyourPersonalSafetySystem™totailortheairbagdeployment
andsafetybeltpretensioneractivationdependinguponsafetybeltusage.
Frontoutboardsafetybeltpretensioners
Thesafetybeltpretensionersatthefrontoutboardseatingpositionsare
designedtotightenthesafetybeltsfirmlyagainsttheoccupant’sbody
duringfrontalcollisions,andinsidecollisionswhenthesideaircurtain
systemactivates.Thishelpsincreasetheeffectivenessofthesafetybelts.
Infrontalcollisions,thesafetybeltpretensionerscanbeactivatedalone
or,ifthecollisionisofsufficientseverity,togetherwiththefrontairbags.
Frontoutboardsafetybeltenergymanagementretractors
Thefrontsafetybeltenergymanagementretractorsallowwebbingtobe
pulledoutoftheretractorinagradualandcontrolledmannerin
responsetotheoccupant’sforwardmomentum.Thishelpsreducethe
riskofforce-relatedinjuriestotheoccupant’schestbylimitingtheload
ontheoccupant.RefertotheEnergymanagementfeaturesectionin
thischapter.
DeterminingifthePersonalSafetySystem™isoperational
ThePersonalSafetySystem™usesawarninglightintheinstrument
clusteroraback-uptonetoindicatetheconditionofthesystem.Refer
totheWarninglightsandchimessectionintheInstrumentCluster
chapter.RoutinemaintenanceofthePersonalSafetySystem™isnot
required.
