Starting
PREPARING TO START YOUR VEHICLE
Enginestartingiscontrolledbythepowertraincontrolsystem.
NOTE:ThissystemmeetsallCanadianInterference-CausingEquipment
standardrequirementsregulatingtheimpulseelectricalfieldstrengthof
radionoise.
Whenstartingafuel-injectedengine,avoidpressingtheaccelerator
beforeorduringstarting.Onlyusetheacceleratorwhenyouhave
difficultystartingtheengine.Formoreinformationonstartingthe
vehicle,refertoStartingtheengineinthischapter.
WARNING: Extendedidlingathighenginespeedscanproduce
veryhightemperaturesintheengineandexhaustsystem,
creatingtheriskoffireorotherdamage.
WARNING: Donotpark,idle,ordriveyourvehicleindrygrass
orotherdrygroundcover.Theemissionsystemheatsupthe
enginecompartmentandexhaustsystem,whichcanstartafire.
WARNING: Donotstartyourvehicleinaclosedgarageorin
otherenclosedareas.Exhaustfumescanbetoxic.Alwaysopen
thegaragedoorbeforeyoustarttheengine.SeeGuarding
againstexhaustfumesinthischapterformoreinstructions.
WARNING: Ifyousmellexhaustfumesinsideyourvehicle,
haveyourauthorizedMazdadealerinspectyourvehicle
immediately.Donotdriveifyousmellexhaustfumes.
Important safety precautions
Acomputersystemcontrolstheengine’sidlerevolutionsperminute
(RPM).Whentheenginestarts,theidleRPMrunsfastertowarmthe
engine.Iftheengineidlespeeddoesnotslowdownautomatically,have
thevehiclecheckedbyyourauthorizedMazdadealership.
Beforestartingthevehicle:

Makesureallvehicleoccupantshavebuckledtheirsafetybelts.For
moreinformationonsafetybeltsandtheirproperusage,refertothe
Seatingandsafetyrestraintschapter.
