Catalytic converter
Driving
Switching off
•
Provided the engine has reached its
normal operating temperature, if a misfire
is suspected, or if the vehicle lacks power
whilst driving, it may be driven SLOWLY
(at riskof damaging the catalyst) to a
Land Rover retailer for assistance.
•
•
DONOTswitch off the engine whilst a
forward or reverse drive gear is selected.
Vehicle maintenance
Any engine misfire which causes the
’Service Engine Soon’warning light to
flash (see ’Warning lights’), loss of engine
performance or engine run-on, could
seriouslydamage the catalytic converter.
For this reason, it is vitalthat unqualified
persons do not tamper with the engine,
and that regular systematic maintenance is
carried out by a Land Rover retailer.
•
•
NEVER allow a vehicle to run out of fuel
(the resultant misfire could destroy the
catalyst).
Engines burning excessive oil (e.g. 1 quart
(1
litre) every750 miles (1200 km)) will
progressivelyreduce catalyst efficiency. In
extreme cases, blue smoke may be
emitted from the exhaust.
•
DONOTrun the engine with a spark plug
or HTlead removed, or use any device that
requires an insert into a spark plug.
•
•
On rough terrain, DONOTallow the
underside of the vehicle to be subjected to
heavyimpacts which could damage the
catalytic converter.
DONOToverload or excessivelyrev the
engine.
WARNING
Exhaust system temperatures can be
extremely high; DONOTpark on ground
where combustible materials such as dry
grass or leaves could come into contact with
the exhaust system (in very dry weather a
fire could result).
