How does the air bag supplemental restraint system work?
TheairbagSRSisdesignedto
activatewhenthevehiclesustains
sufficientlongitudinaldeceleration.
Thefactthattheairbagsdidnot
inflateinacollisiondoesnotmean
thatsomethingiswrongwiththe
system.Rather,itmeanstheforces
werenotofthetypesufficientto
causeactivation.Airbagsare
designedtoinflateinfrontaland
near-frontalcollisions,notrollover,
side-impact,orrear-impacts.
Theairbagsinflateanddeflate
rapidlyuponactivation.Afterairbag
deployment,itisnormaltonoticea
smoke-like,powderyresidueor
smelltheburntpropellant.Thismay
consistofcornstarch,talcum
powder(tolubricatethebag)or
sodiumcompounds(e.g.,baking
soda)thatresultfromthe
combustionprocessthatinflatesthe
airbag.Smallamountsofsodium
hydroxidemaybepresentwhich
mayirritatetheskinandeyes,but
noneoftheresidueistoxic.
Whilethesystemisdesignedtohelp
reduceseriousinjuries,itmayalso
causeminorabrasions,swellingortemporaryhearingloss.Becauseair
bagsmustinflaterapidlyandwithconsiderableforce,thereistheriskof
deathorseriousinjuriessuchasfractures,facialandeyeinjuriesor
