steeringwheelinthedirectionoftheslideuntilyouregaincontrol.
Avoidsuddenapplicationsofpowerandquickchangesofdirectionon
snowandice.Applytheacceleratorslowlyandsteadilywhenstarting
fromafullstop.
Avoidsuddenbrakingaswell.Althougha4WDvehiclemayaccelerate
betterthanatwo-wheeldrivevehicleinsnowandice,itwon’tstopany
faster,becauseasinothervehicles,brakingoccursatallfourwheels.Do
notbecomeoverconfidentastoroadconditions.
Makesureyouallowsufficientdistancebetweenyouandothervehicles
forstopping.Driveslowerthanusualandconsiderusingoneofthelower
gears.Inemergencystoppingsituations,avoidlockingofthewheels.Use
a“squeeze”technique,pushonthebrakepedalwithasteadilyincreasing
forcewhichallowsthewheelstobrakeyetcontinuetorollsothatyou
maysteerinthedirectionyouwanttotravel.Ifyoulockthewheels,
releasethebrakepedalandrepeatthesqueezetechnique.Ifyourvehicle
isequippedwithaFourWheelAnti-LockBrakeSystem(ABS),applythe
brakesteadily.Donot“pump”thebrakes.RefertotheBrakessectionof
thischapterforadditionalinformationontheoperationoftheanti-lock
brakesystem.
Neverdrivewithchainsonthefronttiresof4WDvehicleswithoutalso
puttingthemonthereartires.Thiscouldcausethereartoslideand
swingaroundduringbraking.
Tires,ReplacementRequirements
Donotuseasizeandtypeoftireandwheelotherthanthat
originallyprovidedbyFordMotorCompanybecauseitcanaffect
thesafetyandperformanceofyourvehicle,whichcouldresultinan
increasedriskoflossofvehiclecontrol,vehiclerollover,and/orserious
personalinjuryordeath.
Makesurealltiresandwheelsonthevehicleareofthesamesize,type,
treaddesign,brandandload-carryingcapacity.Ifyouhavequestions
regardingtirereplacement,seeanauthorizedFordorLincoln/Mercury
dealer.
Ifyouneverthelessdecidetoequipyour4WDforoff-roadusewithtires
largerthanwhatFordMotorCompanyrecommends,youshouldnotuse
thesetiresforhighwaydriving.
Ifyouuseanytire/wheelcombinationnotrecommendedbyFordMotor
Company,itmayadverselyaffectvehiclehandlingandcouldcause
steering,suspension,axleortransfercasefailureaswellastheincreased
