slopesorhills.Adangerliesinlosingtraction,slippingsidewaysand
possiblyrollingover.Wheneverdrivingonahill,determinebeforehand
therouteyouwilluse.Donotdriveoverthecrestofahillwithout
seeingwhatconditionsareontheotherside.Donotdriveinreverse
overahillwithouttheaidofanobserver.
Whenclimbingasteepslopeorhill,
startinalowergearratherthan
downshiftingtoalowergearfroma
highergearoncetheascenthas
started.Thisreducesstrainonthe
engineandthepossibilityofstalling.
Ifyoudostallout,donottryto
turnaroundbecauseyoumightroll
over.Itisbettertobackdowntoa
safelocation.
Applyjustenoughpowertothe
wheelstoclimbthehill.Toomuch
powerwillcausethetirestoslip,
spinorlosetraction,resultingin
lossofvehiclecontrol.
Descendahillinthesamegearyou
wouldusetoclimbupthehillto
avoidexcessivebrakeapplication
andbrakeoverheating.Donot
descendinneutral;instead,
disengageoverdriveormanually
shifttoalowergear.When
descendingasteephill,avoid
suddenhardbrakingasyoucould
losecontrol.Whenyoubrakehard,
thefrontwheelscantturnandif
theyarentturning,youwon tbe
abletosteer.Thefrontwheelshavetobeturninginordertosteerthe
vehicle.Rapidpumpingofthebrakepedalwillhelpyouslowthevehicle
andstillmaintainsteeringcontrol.
Ifyourvehiclehasanti-lockbrakes,applythebrakessteadily.Donot
pumpthebrakes.
Drivingonsnowandice
4WDvehicleshaveadvantagesover2WDvehiclesinsnowandicebut
canskidlikeanyothervehicle.
