Howdoesthesideairbagsystemwork?
Thedesignanddevelopmentofthesideairbagsystemincluded
recommendedtestingproceduresthatweredevelopedbyagroupof
automotivesafetyexpertsknownastheSideAirbagTechnicalWorking
Group.Theserecommendedtestingprocedureshelpreducetheriskof
injuriesrelatedtothedeploymentofsideairbags.
Thesideairbagsystemconsistsof
thefollowing:

Aninflatablenylonbag(airbag)
withaninflatorconcealedbehind
theoutboardbolsterofthedriver
andfrontpassengerseatbacks.

Aspecialseatcoverdesignedto
allowairbagdeployment.
Thesamewarninglight,
electroniccontrolanddiagnostic
unitasusedforthefrontairbags.

Crashsensorslocatedonthe
frontdoorsandCpillars(one
sensoroneachpillaroneachside
ofthevehicle).
Sideairbags,incombinationwith
safetybelts,canhelpreducetheriskofsevereinjuriesintheeventofa
significantsideimpactcollision.
Thesideairbagsarefittedontheoutboardsideoftheseatbacksofthe
frontseats.Incertainlateralcollisions,theairbagonthesideaffectedby
thecollisionwillbeinflated.Ifthefrontpassengersensingsystem
detectsanemptyseat,thefrontpassengerseat-mountedsideairbagwill
bedeactivated.Theairbagwasdesignedtoinflatebetweenthedoor
panelandoccupanttofurtherenhancetheprotectionprovided
occupantsinsideimpactcollisions.
