Adding engine coolant
Whenaddingcoolant,makesureitisa50/50mixtureofenginecoolant
anddistilledwater.Addthemixturetothecoolantreservoir,whenthe
engineiscool,untiltheappropriatefilllevelisobtained.
Donotaddenginecoolantwhentheengineishot.Steamand
scaldingliquidsreleasedfromahotcoolingsystemcanburnyou
badly.Also,youcanbeburnedifyouspillcoolantonhotengineparts.
Donotputenginecoolantinthewindshieldwasherfluid
container.Ifsprayedonthewindshield,enginecoolantcould
makeitdifficulttoseethroughthewindshield.

Addantifreeze/coolantthatmeetsthematerialanddesign
specificationsforyourvehicle.RefertoLubricantspecifications
inthischapter.
Note:UseofMotorcraftCoolingSystemStopLeakPelletsoran
equivalentproductmeetingFordspecification,WSS-M99B37-B6,may
darkenthecolorofMotorcraftPremiumGoldEngineCoolantfrom
yellowtogoldentan.

Donotadd/mixanorange-colored,extendedlifecoolantsuch
asMotorcraftSpecialtyOrangeEngineCoolant,meetingFord
specificationWSS-M97B44-D,withthefactory-filledcoolant.
MixingMotorcraftSpecialtyOrangeEngineCoolantorany
orange-coloredextendedlifeproductwithyourfactoryfilledcoolant
canresultindegradedcorrosionprotection.

Alargeamountofwaterwithoutenginecoolantmaybeadded,incase
ofemergency,toreachavehicleservicelocation.Inthisinstance,the
coolingsystemmustbedrainedandrefilledwitha50/50mixtureof
enginecoolantanddistilledwaterassoonaspossible.Wateralone
(withoutenginecoolant)cancauseenginedamagefromcorrosion,
overheatingorfreezing.

Donotusealcohol,methanol,brineoranyenginecoolants
mixedwithalcoholormethanolantifreeze(coolant).Alcohol
andotherliquidscancauseenginedamagefromoverheatingor
freezing.
Donotaddextrainhibitorsoradditivestothecoolant.These
canbeharmfulandcompromisethecorrosionprotectionoftheengine
coolant.
