Occasionalbrakenoiseisnormalandoftendoesnot
indicateaperformanceconcernwiththevehicle’s
brakesystem.Innormaloperation,automotivebrake
systemsmayemitoccasionalorintermittentsqueal
orgroannoiseswhenthebrakesareapplied.Such
noisesareusuallyheardduringthefirstfewbrake
applicationsinthemorning;however,theymaybe
heardatanytimewhilebrakingandcanbe
aggravatedbyenvironmentalconditionssuchas
cold,heat,moisture,roaddust,saltormud.Ifa
“metal-to-metal”,“continuousgrinding”or
“continuoussqueal”soundispresentwhilebraking,
thebrakeliningsmaybeworn-outandshouldbe
inspectedbyaqualifiedservicetechnician.
Anti-lock brake system (ABS) (if equipped)
Onvehiclesequippedwithananti-lockbraking
system(ABS),anoisefromthehydraulicpump
motorandpulsationinthepedalmaybeobserved
duringABSbrakingevents.Pedalpulsationcoupled
withnoisewhilebrakingunderpanicconditionsor
onloosegravel,bumps,wetorsnowyroadsis
normalandindicatesproperfunctioningofthe
vehicle’santi-lockbrakesystem.TheABSperformsa
self-checkat17km/h(10mph)afteryoustartthe
engineandbegintodriveaway.Abriefmechanical
noisemaybeheardduringthistest.Thisisnormal.
Ifamalfunctionisfound,theABSwarninglightwill
comeon.Ifthevehiclehascontinuousvibrationor
shudderinthesteeringwheelwhilebraking,the
vehicleshouldbeinspectedbyaqualifiedservice
technician.
