STARTING THE ENGINE
NOTE:Wheneveryoustartyourvehicle,releasethekeyassoonasthe
enginestarts.Excessivecrankingcoulddamagethestarter.

Turnthekeyto5(START)

withoutpressingtheaccelerator
pedalandreleaseassoonasthe
enginestarts.Thekeywillreturnto

C(10°F)andtheenginedoesnot
startwithinfivesecondsonthefirst
Ifthetemperatureisabove–12°

try,turnthekeytoOFF,wait10secondsandtryagain.

Ifthetemperatureisbelow-12°C(10°F)andtheenginedoesnot
startin15secondsonthefirsttry,turnthekeyOFFandwait10
secondsandtryagain.Iftheenginedoesnotstartintwoattempts,Press
theacceleratorpedalallthewaytofloorandhold.Turnthekeyto
STARTposition.

Whentheenginestarts,releasethekey,thenreleasetheaccelerator
pedalgraduallyastheenginespeedsup.

Afteridlingforafewseconds,applythebrakeandreleasetheparking
brake.
Cold weather starting (flexible fuel  vehicles only)
Astheoutsidetemperatureapproachesfreezing,ethanolfueldistributors
shouldsupplywintergrade(E   85)ethanol(sameaswithunleaded
d
gasoline).Ifsummergrade(E   85)ethanolisusedincoldweather
d
conditions,youmayexperienceincreasedcrankingtimes,roughidleor
hesitationuntiltheenginehaswarmedup.Consultyourfueldistributor
fortheavailabilityofwintergrade(Ed85)ethanol.
High-qualityblendsofwintergrade(E   85)ethanolwillproduce
d
satisfactorycoldweatherstartinganddrivingresults.However,fuel
compositionvaries,andsub-optimalwintergradeblendscouldproduce
increasedcrankingtimes,roughidleorhesitationattemperaturesbelow
–18
degreesC(0degreesF).Ifyouexperiencethisconditionyoumay
findthatadifferentbrandofwintergrade(E     85)(ifavailableinyour
d
area)improvestheperformanceofyourvehicle.
