Important child restraint precautions
YouarerequiredbylawtousesafetyrestraintsforchildrenintheU.S.
andCanada.Ifsmallchildren(generallychildrenwhoarefouryearsold
oryoungerandwhoweigh18kg[40lbs]orless)rideinyourvehicle,
youmustputtheminsafetyseatsmadeespeciallyforchildren.Many
statesrequirethatchildrenuseapprovedboosterseatsuntiltheyare
eightyearsold.Checkyourlocalandstateorprovinciallawsforspecific
requirementsregardingthesafetyofchildreninyourvehicle.When
possible,alwaysplacechildrenunderage12intherearseatofyour
vehicle.Accidentstatisticssuggestthatchildrenaresaferwhenproperly
restrainedintherearseatingpositionsthaninthefrontseatingposition.
Neverletapassengerholdachildonhisorherlapwhilethe
vehicleismoving.Thepassengercannotprotectthechildfrom
injuryinacollision.
Alwaysfollowtheinstructionsandwarningsthatcomewithanyinfantor
childrestraintyoumightuse.
Children and safety belts
Ifthechildisthepropersize,restrainthechildinasafetyseat.Children
whoaretoolargeforchildsafetyseats(asspecifiedbyyourchildsafety
seatmanufacturer)shouldalwayswearsafetybelts.
Followalltheimportantsafetyrestraintandairbagprecautionsthat
applytoadultpassengersinyourvehicle.
Iftheshoulderbeltportionofacombinationlapandshoulderbeltcan
bepositionedsoitdoesnotcrossorrestinfrontofthechild’sfaceor
neck,thechildshouldwearthelapandshoulderbelt.Movingthechild
closertothecenterofthevehiclemayhelpprovideagoodshoulderbelt
fit.
Donotleavechildren,unreliableadults,orpetsunattendedin
yourvehicle.
