potentiallydeadlyriskinsomesituations,particularlywhenafrontseat
occupantisnotproperlybuckledup.Themosteffectivewaytoreduce
theriskofunnecessaryairbaginjurieswithoutreducingtheoverall
safetyofthevehicleistomakesurealloccupantsareproperly
restrainedinthevehicle,especiallyinthefrontseat.Thisprovidesthe
protectionofsafetybeltsandpermitstheairbagstoprovidethe
additionalprotectiontheyweredesignedtoprovide.Ifyouchooseto
deactivateyourairbag,youarelosingtheverysignificantriskreducing
benefitsoftheairbagandyouarealsoreducingtheeffectivenessofthe
safetybelts,becausesafetybeltsinmodernvehiclesaredesignedto
workasasafetysystemwiththeairbags.

NHTSAdeactivationcriteria(excludingCanada)
1.
Infant.Aninfant(lessthan1yearold)mustrideinthefrontseat
because:
•

thevehiclehasnorearseat;
thevehiclehasarearseattoosmalltoaccommodatearear-facing
infantseat;or
•
theinfanthasamedicalconditionwhich,accordingtotheinfant’s
physician,makesitnecessaryfortheinfanttorideinthefrontsothat
thedrivercanconstantlymonitorthechild’ scondition.
2.
Childage1to12.Achildage1to12mustrideinthefrontseat
because:
•
•
thevehiclehasnorearseat;
althoughchildrenages1to12rideintherearseat(s)whenever
possible,childrenages1to12sometimesmustrideinthefront
becausenospaceisavailableintherearseat(s)ofthevehicle;or
•
thechildhasamedicalconditionwhich,accordingtothechild’s
physician,makesitnecessaryforthechildtorideinthefrontseatso
thatthedrivercanconstantlymonitorthechild’ scondition.
3.
Medicalcondition.Apassengerhasamedicalconditionwhich,
accordingtohisorherphysician:
•
causesthepassengerairbagtoposeaspecialriskforthepassenger;
and
•
makesthepotentialharmfromthepassengerairbaginacrash
greaterthanthepotentialharmfromturningOFFtheairbagand
allowingthepassenger,evenifbelted,tohitthedashboardor
windshieldinacrash.
