Four-wheel anti-lock brake system (ABS) (if equipped)
Ifthevehicleisequippedwithananti-lockbrakingsystem(ABS),a
noisefromthehydraulicpumpmotorandpulsationinthepedalmaybe
observedduringABSbrakingevents.Pedalpulsationcoupledwithnoise
whilebrakingunderpanicconditionsoronloosegravel,bumps,wetor
snowyroadsisnormalandindicatesproperfunctioningofthevehicle’s
anti-lockbrakesystem.
NOTE:TheABSperformsaself-checkafteryoustarttheengineand
begintodriveaway.
Abriefmechanicalnoisemaybeheardduringthistest.Thisisnormal.If
amalfunctionisfound,theABSwarninglightwillcomeon.Ifthevehicle
hascontinuousvibrationorshudderinthesteeringwheelwhilebraking,
thevehicleshouldbeinspectedbyanauthorizedMazdadealership.
TheABSoperatesbydetectingthe
onsetofwheellockupduringbrake
applicationsandcompensatesfor
thistendency.Thewheelsare
preventedfromlockingevenwhen
thebrakesarefirmlyapplied.The
accompanyingillustrationdepicts
theadvantageofanABSequipped
vehicle(onbottom)toanon-ABS
equippedvehicle(ontop)duringhardbrakingwithlossoffrontbraking
traction.
WARNING: TheAnti-Locksystemdoesnotdecreasethetime
necessarytoapplythebrakesoralwaysreducestopping
distance.Alwaysleaveenoughroombetweenyourvehicleand
thevehicleinfrontofyoutostop.
ABS warning lamp (if equipped)
The
warninglampintheinstrumentclustermomentarilyilluminates
ABS
whentheignitionisturnedon.Ifthelightdoesnotilluminate
momentarilyatstartup,remainsonorcontinuestoflash,theABSneeds
tobeserviced.
