Operating modes of the 4x4 system
The4x4systemfunctionsintwomodes:

The4x4AUTOmodeprovides
four-wheeldrivewithfullpower
deliveredtothefrontaxleatall
times,andtotherearaxleas
requiredforincreasedtraction.
Thisisappropriatefornormal
LOCK
on-roadoperatingconditions,suchasdryroadsurfaces,wet
pavement,snowandgravel.

The4x4ONmodeprovides
four-wheeldrivewithfullpower
tobothaxlesatalltimes.Itis
onlyintendedforsevereor
LOCK
off-roaddrivingconditions,such
asdeepsnowandice(whereno
dryorwetpavementremainsuncovered)andshallowsandormud.

Thevehicleshouldnotbeoperatedinthe4x4ONmodeondry
ormerelywetpavement.Doingsowillproduceexcessivenoise,
increasetirewearandmaydamagedrivelinecomponents.The
4x4ONmodeisintendedforuseonlyonconsistentlyslippery
orloosesurfaces.
Ifyourvehicleisequippedwiththis4x4system,asparetireof
adifferentdiameterthantheroadtiresshouldneverbeused.
Suchatirecouldresultindamagetodrivelinecomponentsand
makethevehicledifficulttocontrol.
WARNING: Utilityandfour-wheeldrivevehiclesarenot
designedforcorneringatspeedsashighaspassengercarsany
morethanlow-slungsportscarsaredesignedtoperform
satisfactorilyunderoff-roadconditions.Avoidsharpturnsor
abruptmaneuversinthesevehicles.
4x4 system indicator lights
The4x4modeindicatorlightilluminatesonlyunderthefollowing
conditions.Iftheindicatorlightilluminateswhendrivinginthe4x4
AUTOmode,contactyourMazdadealerassoonaspossible.
