Thefluidlevelwilldropslowlyas
thebrakeswear,andwillrisewhen
thebrakecomponentsarereplaced.
Fluidlevelsbetweenthe“MIN”and
“MAX”linesarewithinthenormal
operatingrange,thereisnoneedto
addfluid.Ifthefluidlevelsare
outsideofthenormaloperating
range,theperformanceofyour
brake/clutch(ifequipped)system
couldbecompromised,seekservicefromanauthorizedMazdadealer
immediately.
TRANSMISSION FLUID
Checking automatic transmission fluid
Refertoyourscheduledmaintenancesectionforscheduledintervalsfor
fluidchecksandchanges.Yourtransaxledoesnotconsumefluid.
However,thefluidlevelshouldbecheckedifthetransaxleisnotworking
properly,i.e.,ifthetransaxleslipsorshiftsslowlyorifyounoticesome
signoffluidleakage.
Automatictransmissionfluidexpandswhenwarmed.Toobtainan
accuratefluidcheck,drivethevehicleuntilitiswarmedup
(approximately30km[20miles]).Ifyourvehiclehasbeen
operatedforanextendedperiodathighspeeds,incitytraffic
duringhotweatherorpullingatrailer,thevehicleshouldbe
turnedoffforabout30minutestoallowfluidtocoolbefore
checking.

Drivethevehicle30km(20miles)oruntilitreachesnormal
operatingtemperature.

Parkthevehicleonalevelsurfaceandengagetheparkingbrake.
Withtheparkingbrakeengagedandyourfootonthebrakepedal,
starttheengineandmovethegearshiftleverthroughallofthegear
ranges.Allowsufficienttimeforeachgeartoengage.

LatchthegearshiftleverinP(Park)andleavetheenginerunning.
Removethedipstick,wipingitcleanwithaclean,drylintfreerag.If
necessary,refertoIdentifyingcomponentsintheengine
compartmentinthischapterforthelocationofthedipstick.

Installthedipstickmakingsureitisfullyseatedinthefillertube.
Removethedipstickandinspectthefluidlevel.Thefluidshouldbe
inthecrosshatchzonefornormaloperatingtemperature.
