BRAKE-SHIFT INTERLOCK
Thisvehicleisequippedwithabrake-shiftinterlockfeaturethatprevents
thegearshiftleverfrombeingmovedfromP(Park)whentheignitionis
intheonpositionunlessthebrakepedalispressed.
IfyoucannotmovethegearshiftleveroutofP(Park)withignitionin
theonpositionandthebrakepedalpressed,itispossiblethatafusehas
blownorthevehicle’sbrakelampsarenotoperatingproperly.Referto
FusesandrelaysintheRoadsideEmergencieschapter.
Ifthefuseisnotblownandthebrakelampsareworkingproperly,the
followingprocedurewillallowyoutomovethegearshiftleverfromP
(Park):
1.
Applytheparkingbrake,turnignitionkeytooff,thenremovethekey.
2.

Usingaflatheadscrewdriver,removetheplasticcover.
Inserttheignitionkeyandpushit
straightdowntoreleasethe
interlock.
4.
Applytheparkingbrake,then
shifttoN(Neutral).
5.
Startthevehicle.Note:Starting
thevehicleinN(Neutral)still
requiresfollowingthestepsinthe
Preparingtostartyourvehicle
section.
6.
Todrive,withthebrakepedal
stillpressed,releasetheparking
brakeandshifttoD(Drive)orR(Reverse).
Seeyourauthorizeddealerassoonaspossibleifthisprocedure
isused.
WARNING:Donotdriveyourvehicleuntilyouverifythatthe
brakelampsareworking.
WARNING:Alwayssettheparkingbrakefullyandmakesure
thegearshiftislatchedinP(Park).Turntheignitiontotheoff
positionandremovethekeywheneveryouleaveyourvehicle.
