Usingthebrakes
ANTI-LOCKBRAKESYSTEM
(ABS)
Vacuumassistedbrake
Avoid resting your foot on the brake pedal
while driving. This will overheat the brakes,
wearoutthebrakeliningsandpadsfasterand
reducegasmileage.
To help save the brakes and to prevent the
brakesfromoverheating,beforegoingdowna
slopeorlonggrade,reducespeedanddown-
shifttoalowergear.
Theanti-lockbrakesystemcontrolsthebrakes
ateachwheelsothewheelswillnotlockwhen
brakingabruptlyorwhenbrakingonslippery
surfaces. The system detects the rotation
speedateachwheelandvariesthebrakefluid
pressuretopreventeachwheelfromlocking.
Bypreventingwheellockup,thesystemhelps
thedrivermaintainsteeringcontrolandhelps
to minimize swerving and spinning on slip-
perysurfaces.
The brake booster aids braking by using
enginevacuum.Iftheenginestops,youcan
stop the vehicle by depressing the brake
pedal.However,greaterfootpressureonthe
brakepedalwillberequiredtostopthevehicle
andthestoppingdistancewillbelonger.
Wetbrakes
WARNING
Whenthevehicleiswashedordriventhrough
water, the brakes may get wet. As a result,
yourbrakingdistancewillbelongerandthe
vehiclemaypulltoonesideduringbraking.
● While driving on a slippery sur-
face, be careful when braking,
accelerating
Abrupt braking or accelerating
could cause the wheels to skid
andresultinanaccident.

Depressthebrakepedalandholditdown.

Todrybrakes,drivethevehicleatasafespeed
while lightly pressing the brake pedal to
heat-up the brakes. Do this until the brakes
returntonormal.Avoiddrivingthevehicleat
high speeds until the brakes function cor-
rectly.
WARNING
Donotpumpthebrakepedal.
● Iftheengineisnotrunningoris
turned off while driving, the
power assist for the brakes will
notwork.Brakingwillbeharder.
Doing so may result in increased
stoppingdistances.
