SUMMARY—ECCSENGINE
The magic of the ECCS system is that it
coordinates the functions and control of air-
fuel mixture, ignition timing, exhaust gas
recirculation,andidlespeedbytheoperation
of a high-speed computer. The precisely
coordinated control of all of these functions
allows the engine to operate more efficiently
and emission free than would have been
possibleunderearliertechnologies.
Thetypicalcontrolsystememploys‘‘sensors’’,
which collect information about operating
conditions and driver demand and send it,
usually in the form of an electrical voltage
signal,toan‘‘enginecontrolmodule’’,which
is a small, on-board computer. The engine
controlmodulemonitorstheinformationpro-
videdbythesensors,calculatestheoptimum
orbestcontrol,andmakesithappenthrough
signalstoelectrical‘‘actuators’’intheengine
or transmission or brake system—wherever
the control must take place. The results can
seemmiraculous.
