Octaneratingtips
In most parts of North America, you should
useunleadedgasolinewithanoctaneratingof
at least 87 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number.
However,youmayuseunleadedgasolinewith
anoctaneratingaslowas85AKI(Anti-Knock
Index) number in these high altitude areas
[over4,000ft(1,219m)]suchas:Colorado,
Montana, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming,
northeasternNevada,southernIdaho,western
SouthDakota,westernNebraska,andthatpart
of Texas which is directly south of New
Mexico.
Ifanyundesirabledriveabilityproblemssuch
as engine stalling and hard hot starting are
experiencedafterusingoxygenate-blendfuels,
immediately change to a non-oxygenate fuel
orafuelwithalowblendofMTBE.
Incorrectignitiontimingwillresultinknock-
ing,after-runoroverheating.Thisinturnmay
causeexcessivefuelconsumptionordamage
totheengine.Ifanyoftheabovesymptoms
areencountered,haveyourvehiclecheckedat
anINFINITIdealerorothercompetentservice
facility.
Take care not to spill gasoline during
refueling.Gasolinecontainingoxygen-
atescancausepaintdamage.
Aftermarketfueladditives
However,nowandthenyoumaynotice
lightsparkknockforashorttimewhile
acceleratingordrivinguphills.Thisis
nocauseforconcern,becauseyouget
thegreatestfuelbenefitwhenthereis
lightsparkknockforashorttimeunder
heavyengineload.
Using unleaded gasoline with an oc-
taneratinglowerthanstatedabovecan
causepersistent,heavy‘‘sparkknock’’.
(‘‘Spark knock’’ is a metallic rapping
noise.) If severe, this can lead to en-
ginedamage.Ifyoudetectapersistent
INFINITIdoesnotrecommendtheuseofany
fueladditives(i.e.fuelinjectorcleaner,octane
booster, intake valve deposit removers, etc.)
which are sold commercially. Many of these
additivesintendedforgum,varnishordeposit
removalmaycontainactivesolventorsimilar
