WhenABSstopsoperating,extrainitialpedal

Onsoftsurfacessuchaspowderysnow,
sandorgravel,andalsoonveryrough
surfaces,brakingdistanceswithABSmay
begreaterthanthoseachievablewitha
non-ABSsystem.Thisisbecausethe
naturalactionoflockedwheelsonsoft
surfacesistobuildupawedgeofmaterial
infrontofthewheelswhichassistsin
stopping(however,ABSwillcontinueto
providebetterstabilityandsteering
control).
travelwillbeexperiencedandthe’feel’ofthe
brakepedalwillreverttoitsnon-ABS
condition.
WARNING
Donotpumpthebrakepedalatanytimeas
thiswillinterruptABSoperationandmay
increasebrakingdistance.
Ensurethattherearenoobstructions
beneaththebrakepedalwhichmayprevent
fulltravel,i.e.additionalfloormats.
•
Ifthevehicleisbroughttorestonasteep
slopewhichhasaverylow-friction
surface,thevehiclemayslidewiththe
wheelslockedbecausethereisnowheel
rotationtosignalmovementtotheABS.If
thisoccurs,momentarilyreleasethe
brakes(topermitsomewheelrotation),
beforere-applyingthemtoallowABSto
regaincontrol.Whereaslowdescentis
necessary,engageaLOWrangegearwith
theenginerunningtoallowacontrolled
descent(see’Off-roaddriving’forfurther
information).
Brakepedalreactionswillbedifferentfrom
thoseexperiencedonanon-ABSvehicle.

UnderABScontrol,heavybrakingonadry
roadmayproducetyrenoiseandslight
markingoftheroadsurface.Neitherneed
causeconcern.
•
Solenoidcyclingmaysometimesbeheard
whendrivingonveryroughroadsorwhile
’
pittedsurfaces.Thisispartofthenormal
ABSfunction.
feathering’(lightbraking)overirregularor
WARNING
ABSisdesignedtooperateonlywith
genuineLandRoverparts,andthetyresand
wheelsspecifiedin’Generaldata’.

Ifexcessivepedaltravelisexperienced,
fullbrakingwillstillbeavailable;pushthe
pedalthroughthefreemovementuntil
resistanceisfelt,thenapplythenecessary
forcetoobtainbraking.However,assoon
assafetypermitsstopthevehicleandseek
qualifiedassistancebeforecontinuing.
