Similarly,enginecrankingtimeswillalso
increase;at-30°Cthestartermotormayneed
tobeoperatedcontinuouslyforaslongas
secondsbeforetheenginewillstart.For
thisreason,ensurethatallnon-essential
electricalequipmentisswitchedoff.
Thecatalyticconverter(iffitted)iseasily
damagedthroughimproperuse,particularly
ifthewrongfuelisused,orifanengine
misfireoccurs.

Blockheaters
Beforestartingtheengineanddriving,
ENSUREthatyouarefamiliarwiththe
precautionsshownunder’Catalyticconverter’
laterinthissection.
Onlyapprovedblockheatersrestrictedtoa
maximumof400Wshouldbeused.Block
heatersthatexceedthisoutputmaydamage
theemissioncontrolcomponents.
Inparticular,youshouldbeawarethatifthe
enginefailstostart,continueduseofthe
startermayresultinunburntfueldamaging
thecatalyticconverter.
Warming-up
Intheinterestsoffueleconomy,itisadvisable
tostartdrivingstraightaway,remembering
thatharshaccelerationorlabouringtheengine
beforethenormaloperatingtemperaturehas
beenreachedcandamagetheengine.

Checkthatthehandbrakeisappliedand
thatthegearleverisin’P’or’N’.
Afterstarting,ensurethatthehandbrakeor
footbrakearefirmlyappliedandthe
acceleratorpedalisnotpressedwhilemoving
thegearselectorleverfrom’N’or’P’,
otherwisethevehiclewillmoveimmediately
theselectorleverismovedtooneofthedrive
positions.Thisisparticularlyimportantwhen
theengineiscoldbecausetheenginewillbe
idlingatafasterspeedthannormal.
Switchoffallunnecessaryelectrical
equipment.
Insertthestarterkeyandturntheswitch
toposition’II’andthenontoposition’III’
tooperatethestartermotor;DONOT
presstheacceleratorpedalduringstarting,
andRELEASETHEKEYassoonasthe
engineisrunning.
IntemperateclimatesDONOToperatethe
starterforlongerthan5seconds;iftheengine
failstostart,switchoffandwaitfor10
secondsbeforere-usingthestarter.Please
notethatcontinueduseofthestarterwill
dischargethebattery.Intemperateclimates
thebatterychargingandoilpressurewarning
lightsshouldextinguishassoonastheengine
isrunning.
