posesaspecialriskforthepassengeriftheairbagdeploys;and
makesthepotentialharmfromthepassengerairbagdeployment
greaterthanthepotentialharmfromturningOFFtheairbagand
experiencingacrashwithouttheprotectionofferedbytheairbag
Thisvehiclehasspecialenergymanagementsafetybeltsforthe
driverandrightfrontpassenger.Theseparticularbeltsare
specificallydesignedtoworkwithairbagstohelpreducetheriskof
injuryinacollision.Theenergymanagementsafetybeltisdesignedto
giveorreleaseadditionalbeltwebbinginsomeaccidentstoreduce
concentrationofforceonanoccupant’schestandreducetheriskof
certainbonefracturesandinjuriestounderlyingorgans.Inacrash,ifthe
airbagisturnedOFF,thisenergymanagementsafetybeltmightpermit
thepersonwearingthebelttomoveforwardenoughtoincuraseriousor
fatalinjury.Themoreseverethecrash,andtheheaviertheoccupant,the
greatertheriskis.BesuretheairbagisturnedONforanypersonwho
doesnotqualifyundertheNHTSAdeactivationcriteria.

Seethefollowingsectionsfordirectionsonhowtoproperlyusesafety
restraintsforchildren.AlsoseeAirbagsupplementalrestraintsystem
(SRS)inthischapterforspecialinstructionsaboutusingairbags.
Important child restraint precautions
YouarerequiredbylawtousesafetyrestraintsforchildrenintheU.S.
andCanada.Ifsmallchildren(generallychildrenwhoarefouryearsold
oryoungerandwhoweigh40lb.[18kg]orless)rideinyourvehicle,you
mustputtheminsafetyseatsmadeespeciallyforchildren.Manystates
requirethatchildrenuseapprovedboosterseatsuntiltheyareeight
yearsold.Checkyourlocalandstateorprovinciallawsforspecific
requirementsregardingthesafetyofchildreninyourvehicle.When
possible,alwaysplacechildrenunderage12intherearseatofyour
vehicle.Accidentstatisticssuggestthatchildrenaresaferwhenproperly
restrainedintherearseatingpositionsthaninthefrontseatingposition.
Neverletapassengerholdachildonhisorherlapwhilethe
vehicleismoving.Thepassengercannotprotectthechildfrom
injuryinacollision.
