Iftheenginereachesapresetover-temperaturecondition,theengine
willautomaticallyswitchtoalternatingcylinderoperation.Eachdisabled
cylinderactsasanairpumpandcoolstheengine.
Whenthisoccursthevehiclewillstilloperate.However:

Theenginepowerwillbelimited.
Theairconditioningsystemwillbedisabled.
Thissystemhasgivenyouanearlywarningofenginedamageandyou
shouldimmediatelydrivetoaplaceofsafetywheretheenginecanbe
cooledorthevehicletowedtoaserviceshop.Continuingtodriveinthis
LimptoSafetymodewillincreaseenginetemperaturesomemore,
increasingthechanceofenginedamage,and:

Theenginewillcompletelyshutdown.
Steeringandbrakingeffortwillincrease.
Ifyouhavedecidednottohavethevehicletowed,andwhentheengine
temperaturecools,youtrytore-startitanditappearstohavereturned
tonormaloperation,don’tdelayingettingtoaservicefacilityassoonas
possibletodiagnosewhatcausedtheoverheatandpreventfurther
enginedamage.
WhenLimptoSafetymodeisactivated
YouhavelimitedenginepowerwhenintheLimptoSafetymode,so
drivethevehiclewithcaution.Thevehiclewillnotbeabletomaintain
highspeedoperationandtheenginewillrunrough.Rememberthatthe
engineiscapableofcompletelyshuttingdownautomaticallytoprevent
enginedamage,therefore:

Pullofftheroadassoonassafelypossibleandturnofftheengine.
Arrangeforthevehicletobetakentoaservicefacility.
Ifthisisnotpossible,waitfortheenginetocooldown.
