drivingcycleswithouttheseoranyothertemporarymalfunctions
present,theCheckenginelightshouldturnoff.(Adrivingcycleconsists
ofacoldenginestartupfollowedbymixedcity/highwaydriving.)No
additionalvehicleserviceisrequired.
IftheCheckenginelightremainson,haveyourvehicleservicedatthe
firstavailableopportunity.
Readiness for Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) testing
Insomelocalities,itmaybealegalrequirementtopassanI/Mtestof
theon-boarddiagnosticssystem.IfyourCheckengine/Serviceengine
soonlightison,refertothedescriptionintheWarninglightsand
chimessectionoftheInstrumentClusterchapter.Yourvehiclemaynot
passtheI/MtestwiththeCheckengine/Serviceenginesoonlighton.
Ifthevehicle’spowertrainsystemoritsbatteryhasjustbeenserviced,
theon-boarddiagnosticssystemisresettoa“notreadyforI/Mtest”
condition.Toreadytheon-boarddiagnosticssystemforI/Mtesting,a
minimumof30minutesofcityandhighwaydrivingisnecessaryas
describedbelow:

First,atleast10minutesofdrivingonanexpresswayorhighway.
Next,atleast20minutesdrivinginstop-and-go,city-typetrafficwith
atleastfouridleperiods.
Allowthevehicletositforatleasteighthourswithoutstartingthe
engine.Then,starttheengineandcompletetheabovedrivingcycle.The
enginemustwarmuptoitsnormaloperatingtemperature.Oncestarted,
donotturnofftheengineuntiltheabovedrivingcycleiscomplete.
