NHTSAgivespermissiontoinstallairbagcut-offswitchesinthe
followingterms:

Infant.Aninfant(lessthan1yearold)mustrideinthefrontseat
because:

thevehiclehasnorearseat;
thevehiclehasarearseattoosmalltoaccommodatearear-facing
infantseat;or
•
theinfanthasamedicalconditionwhich,accordingtotheinfant’s
physician,makesitnecessaryfortheinfanttorideinthefrontsothat
thedrivercanconstantlymonitorthechild’ scondition.
2.
Childage1to12.Achildage1to12mustrideinthefrontseat
because:
•

thevehiclehasnorearseat;
althoughchildrenages1to12rideintherearseat(s)whenever
possible,childrenages1to12sometimesmustrideinthefront
becausenospaceisavailableintherearseat(s)ofthevehicle;or
•
thechildhasamedicalconditionwhich,accordingtothechild’s
physician,makesitnecessaryforthechildtorideinthefrontseatso
thatthedrivercanconstantlymonitorthechild’ scondition.
3.
Medicalcondition.Apassengerhasamedicalconditionwhich,
accordingtohisorherphysician:

causesthepassengerairbagtoposeaspecialriskforthepassenger;
and
makesthepotentialharmfromthepassengerairbaginacrash
greaterthanthepotentialharmfromturningOFFtheairbagand
allowingthepassenger,evenifbelted,tohitthedashboardor
windshieldinacrash.
