andletthepedalupgradually.When
youarenotshifting,donotrestyour
footontheclutchpedal.Thiscan
causeyourclutchtowearoutfaster.
Whenslowingdown,youcanget
extrabrakingfromtheengineby
shiftingtoalowergear.Thisextra
brakingcanhelpyoumaintainasafe
speedandpreventyourbrakesfrom
overheatingwhilegoingdowna
steephill.Beforedownshifting,
makesuretheenginespeedwillnot
gointothetachometer’sredzonein
thelowergear.
Cometoafullstopbeforeyoushift
intoreverse.Youcandamagethe
transmissionbytryingtoshiftinto
reversewiththevehiclemoving.
Pushdowntheclutchpedal,and
pauseforafewsecondsbefore
shiftingintoreverse,orshiftintoone
oftheforwardgearsforamoment.
Thisstopsthegearssotheywon’t
‘‘grind.’’
Onmodelswithmanualtransmission
Themanualtransmissionis
synchronizedinallforwardgearsfor
smoothoperation.Ithasalockoutso
youcannotshiftdirectlyfromfifthto
reverse.
Rapidslowingorspeedingup
cancauselossofcontrolon
slipperysurfaces.Ifyoucrash,
youcanbeinjured.

slipperysurfaces.
