ignitionswitchtotheSTART(III)
position:
NothingHappensortheStarter
MotorOperatesVerySlowly
Whenyouturntheignitionswitchto
theSTART(III)position,youdonot
hearthenormalnoiseoftheengine
tryingtostart.Youmayheara
clickingsound,aseriesofclicks,or
nothingatall.
Turntheignitionswitchtothe
START(III)position.Ifthe
headlightsdonotdim,checkthe
conditionofthefuses.Ifthefuses
areOK,thereisprobably
somethingwrongwiththe
Youhearnothing,oralmost
nothing.Theengine’sstarter
motordoesnotoperateatall,or
operatesveryslowly.
electricalcircuitfortheignition
switchorstartermotor.Youwill
needaqualifiedmechanicto
determinetheproblem(see
EmergencyTowingonpage379).
Checkthesethings:
Youcanhearthestartermotor
operatingnormally,orthestarter
motorsoundslikeitisspinning
fasterthannormal,buttheengine
doesnotstartupandrun.
Checkthetransmissioninterlock.
Ifyouhaveamanualtransmission,
theclutchpedalmustbepushed
allthewaytothefloororthe
starterwillnotoperate.Withan
automatictransmission,itmustbe
inParkorneutral.
Iftheheadlightsdimnoticeablyor
gooutwhenyoutrytostartthe
engine,eitherthebatteryisdis-
chargedortheconnectionsare
corroded.Checktheconditionof
thebatteryconnections(seepage

51).Youcanthentryjump
TurntheignitionswitchtotheON
(II)position.Turnonthe
headlights,andchecktheir
startingthevehiclefromabooster
battery(seepage364).
brightness.Iftheheadlightsare
verydimordonotcomeonatall,
