HowdoesthePersonalSafetySystemwork?
ThePersonalSafetySystemcanadaptthedeploymentstrategyofyour
vehicle’ssafetydevicesaccordingtocrashseverityandoccupant
conditions.Acollectionofcrashandoccupantsensorsprovides
informationtotheRestraintsControlModule(RCM).Duringacrash,the
RCMmayactivatethesafetybeltpretensionersand/oreitheroneorboth
stagesofthedual-stageairbagsupplementalrestraintsbasedoncrash
severityandoccupantconditions.
Thefactthatthepretensionersorairbagsdidnotactivateforbothfront
seatoccupantsinacollisiondoesnotmeanthatsomethingiswrongwith
thesystem.Rather,itmeansthePersonalSafetySystemdeterminedthe
accidentconditions(crashseverity,beltusage,etc.)werenot
appropriatetoactivatethesesafetydevices.Frontairbagsaredesigned
toactivateonlyinfrontalandnear-frontalcollisions(notrollovers,side
impactsorrearimpacts)unlessthecollisioncausessufficient
longitudinaldeceleration.Thepretensionersaredesignedtoactivatein
frontalandnear-frontalcollisions,andinsidecollisions.
Driverandpassengerdual-stageairbagsupplementalrestraints
Thedual-stageairbagsofferthecapabilitytotailorthelevelofairbag
inflationenergy.Alower,lessforcefulenergylevelisprovidedformore
common,moderate-severityimpacts.Ahigherenergylevelisusedfor
themostsevereimpacts.RefertoAirbagsupplementalrestraint
system(SRS)sectioninthischapter.
Frontcrashseveritysensor
Thefrontcrashseveritysensorenhancestheabilitytodetectthe
severityofanimpact.Positionedupfront,itprovidesvaluable
informationearlyinthecrasheventontheseverityoftheimpact.This
allowsyourPersonalSafetySystemtodistinguishbetweendifferent
levelsofcrashseverityandmodifythedeploymentstrategyofthe
dual-stageairbagsandsafetybeltpretensioners.
Driver’sseatpositionsensor
Thedriver’sseatpositionsensorallowsyourPersonalSafetySystemto
tailorthedeploymentlevelofthedriverdual-stageairbagbasedonseat
position.Thesystemisdesignedtohelpprotectsmallerdriverssitting
closetothedriverairbagbyprovidingalowerairbagoutputlevel.

forcecanposeapotentiallydeadlyrisktooccupantsthatareveryclose
