Theairbagsinflateanddeflate
rapidlyuponactivation.Afterairbag
deployment,itisnormaltonoticea
smoke-like,powderyresidueor
smelltheburntpropellant.Thismay
consistofcornstarch,talcum
powder(tolubricatethebag)or
sodiumcompounds(e.g.,baking
soda)thatresultfromthe
combustionprocessthatinflatesthe
airbag.Smallamountsofsodium
hydroxidemaybepresentwhich
mayirritatetheskinandeyes,but
noneoftheresidueistoxic.
Whilethesystemisdesignedtohelp
reduceseriousinjuries,contactwith
adeployingairbagmayalsocauseabrasions,swellingortemporary
hearingloss.Becauseairbagsmustinflaterapidlyandwithconsiderable
force,thereistheriskofdeathorseriousinjuriessuchasfractures,
facialandeyeinjuriesorinternalinjuries,particularlytooccupantswho
arenotproperlyrestrainedorareotherwiseoutofpositionatthetime
ofairbagdeployment.Thus,itisextremelyimportantthatoccupantsbe
properlyrestrainedasfarawayfromtheairbagmoduleaspossiblewhile
maintainingvehiclecontrol.
TheSRSconsistsof:
driverandpassengerairbagmodules(whichincludetheinflatorsand
airbags)
oneormoreimpactandsafingsensors
areadinesslightandtone
adiagnosticmodule
andtheelectricalwiringwhichconnectsthecomponents
Thediagnosticmodulemonitorsitsowninternalcircuitsandthe
supplementalairbagelectricalsystemwarning(includingtheimpact
sensors),thesystemwiring,theairbagsystemreadinesslight,theair
bagbackuppowerandtheairbagignitors.
Severalairbagsystemcomponentsgethotafterinflation.Donot
touchthemafterinflation.
