Shouldyoustarttoslidewhiledrivingonsnowyoricyroads,turnthe
steeringwheelinthedirectionoftheslideuntilyouregaincontrol.
Avoidsuddenapplicationsofpowerandquickchangesofdirectionon
snowandice.Applytheacceleratorslowlyandsteadilywhenstarting
fromafullstop.
Avoidsuddenbrakingaswell.Althougha4x4vehiclemayaccelerate
betterthanatwo-wheeldrivevehicleinsnowandice,itwon’tstopany
faster,becauseasinothervehicles,brakingoccursatallfourwheels.Do
notbecomeoverconfidentastoroadconditions.
Makesureyouallowsufficientdistancebetweenyouandothervehicles
forstoppingaswellasdriveslowerthanusualandconsiderusingoneof
thelowergears.Inemergencystoppingsituations,avoidlockingofthe
wheels.Usea“squeeze”technique,pushonthebrakepedalwitha
steadilyincreasingforcewhichallowsthewheelstobrakeyetcontinue
torollsothatyoumaysteerinthedirectionyouwanttotravel.Ifyou
lockthewheels,releasethebrakepedalandrepeatthesqueeze
technique.IfyourvehicleisequippedwithaFourWheelAnti-Lock
BrakeSystem(ABS),applythebrakesteadily.Donot“pump”the
brakes.RefertotheBrakessectionofthischapterforadditional
informationontheoperationoftheanti-lockbrakesystem.
Neverdrivewithchainsonthefronttiresof4x4vehicleswithoutalso
puttingthemonthereartires.Thiscouldcausethereartoslideand
swingaroundduringbraking.
