STARTING AND OPERATING
Ifusingamanualtransmissionvehiclefortrailertowing,
all starts must be in 1st gear to avoid excessive clutch
slippage.

Toreducepotentialforautomatictransmissionoverheat-
ing,selectthe“O/DOFF”featurewhendrivinginhilly
areas or shift the transmission to DRIVE position 2 on
moreseveregrades.Referto“TransmissionShifting”in
thissection.
The DRIVE range can be selected when towing. How-
ever, if frequent shifting occurs while in this range, the
OVERDRIVErangeshouldbeselected.
NOTE: Using “O/D OFF” while operating the vehicle
under heavy operating conditions will improve perfor-
mance and extend transmission life by reducing exces-
sive shifting and heat build up. This action will also
providebetterenginebraking.

Don’tuseinhillyterrainorwithheavyloads.
Whenusingthespeedcontrol,ifyouexperiencespeed
dropsgreaterthan10mph(16km/h),disengageuntil
youcangetbacktocruisingspeed.
The automatic transmission fluid and filter should be
changedifyouREGULARLYtowatrailerformorethan
45
minutesofcontinuousoperation.Refertothe“Main-
tenanceSchedule”inSection8ofthismanualfortrans-
missionfluidchangeintervals.
