Descendahillinthesamegearyou
wouldusetoclimbupthehillto
avoidexcessivebrakeapplication
andbrakeoverheating.Donot
descendinneutral;instead,
disengageoverdriveormanually
shifttoalowergear.When
descendingasteephill,avoid
suddenhardbrakingasyoucould
losecontrol.Whenyoubrakehard,
thefrontwheelscan’tturnandif
theyaren’tturning,youwon’tbe
abletosteer.Thefrontwheelshavetobeturninginordertosteerthe
vehicle.Rapidpumpingofthebrakepedalwillhelpyouslowthevehicle
andstillmaintainsteeringcontrol.
Ifyourvehiclehasanti-lockbrakes,applythebrakessteadily.Donot
“pump”thebrakes.
Drivingonsnowandice
4x4vehicleshaveadvantagesover2WDvehiclesinsnowandicebutcan
skidlikeanyothervehicle.
Shouldyoustarttoslidewhiledrivingonsnowyoricyroads,turnthe
steeringwheelinthedirectionoftheslideuntilyouregaincontrol.
Avoidsuddenapplicationsofpowerandquickchangesofdirectionon
snowandice.Applytheacceleratorslowlyandsteadilywhenstarting
fromafullstop.
Avoidsuddenbrakingaswell.Althougha4x4vehiclemayaccelerate
betterthanatwo-wheeldrivevehicleinsnowandice,itwon’tstopany
faster,becauseasinothervehicles,brakingoccursatallfourwheels.Do
notbecomeoverconfidentastoroadconditions.
Makesureyouallowsufficientdistancebetweenyouandothervehicles
forstopping.Driveslowerthanusualandconsiderusingoneofthelower
gears.Inemergencystoppingsituations,avoidlockingofthewheels.Use
a“squeeze”technique,pushonthebrakepedalwithasteadilyincreasing
forcewhichallowsthewheelstobrakeyetcontinuetorollsothatyou
maysteerinthedirectionyouwanttotravel.Ifyoulockthewheels,
releasethebrakepedalandrepeatthesqueezetechnique.Ifyourvehicle
