How does the air  bag supplemental restraint system work?
TheairbagSRSisdesignedto
activatewhenthevehiclesustainsa
longitudinaldecelerationsufficient
tocausetheairbagsensorstoclose
anelectricalcircuitthatinitiatesair
baginflation.Thefactthattheair
bagsdidnotinflateinacollision
doesnotmeanthatsomethingis
wrongwiththesystem.Rather,it
meanstheforceswerenotsufficient
enoughtocauseactivation.Airbags
aredesignedtoinflateinfrontaland
near-frontalcollisions,notrollover,side-impact,orrear-impactsunless
thecollisioncausessufficientlongitudinaldeceleration.
Theairbagsinflateanddeflate
rapidlyuponactivation.Afterairbag
deployment,itisnormaltonoticea
smoke-like,powderyresidueor
smelltheburntpropellant.Thismay
consistofcornstarch,talcum
powderorsodiumcompoundswhich
mayirritatetheskinandeyes,but
noneoftheresidueistoxic.
WhiletheSRSisdesignedtohelp
reduceseriousinjuries,contactwith
adeployingairbagmayalsocause
abrasions,swellingortemporary
hearingloss.Becauseairbagsmust
inflaterapidlyandwithconsiderable
force,thereistheriskofdeathor
seriousinjuriessuchasfractures,facialandeyeinjuriesorinternal
injuries,particularlytooccupantswhoarenotproperlyrestrainedorare
otherwiseoutofpositionatthetimeofairbagdeployment.Itis
extremelyimportantthatoccupantsbeproperlyrestrainedasfaraway
fromtheairbagmoduleaspossiblewhilemaintainingvehiclecontrol.

driverandpassengerairbagmodules(whichincludetheinflatorsand
airbags)
