Preparing to tow
Usetheproperequipmentfortowingatrailerandmakesureitis
properlyattachedtoyourvehicle.Seeyourdealerorareliabletrailer
dealerifyourequireassistance.
Hitches
Donotusehitchesthatclampontothevehiclebumper.Useaload
carryinghitch.Youmustdistributetheloadinyourtrailersothat
10–15%
ofthetotalweightofthetrailerisonthetongue.
Safety chains
Alwaysconnectthetrailer’ssafetychainstohookretainersonthe
vehicle.Toconnectthetrailer’ssafetychains,crossthechainsunderthe
trailertongueandallowslackforturningcorners.
Ifyouusearentaltrailer,followtheinstructionsthattherentalagency
givestoyou.
Donotattachsafetychainstothebumper.
Trailer brakes
Electricbrakesandmanual,automaticorsurge-typetrailerbrakesare
safeifinstalledproperlyandadjustedtothemanufacturer’s
specifications.ThetrailerbrakesmustmeetlocalandFederal
regulations.
Donotconnectatrailer’shydraulicbrakesystemdirectlytoyour
vehicle’sbrakesystem.Yourvehiclemaynothaveenough
brakingpowerandyourchancesofhavingacollisiongreatlyincrease.
Thebrakingsystemofthetowvehicleisratedforoperationatthe
GVWRnotGCWR.
