Also,theORCturnsonthe“AirbagWarning
Light” for 6 to 8 seconds for a self-check
whentheignitionisfirstturnedon.Afterthe
self-check,the“AirbagWarningLight”will
turnoff.IftheORCdetectsamalfunctioninanypart
ofthesystem,itturnsonthe“AirbagWarningLight”
either momentarily or continuously. A single chime
willsoundifthelightcomesonagainafterinitialstart
up.
HowTheAirbagSystemWorks
•
The Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) Module de-
terminesifafrontal,side,orrollovercollisionissevere
enough to require the front and/or side airbags to
inflate. The front airbag inflators are designed to
provide different rates of airbag inflation from direc-
tion provided by the ORC. The ORC will detect roll
overs,notrearimpacts.
WARNING!
TheORCalsomonitorsthereadinessoftheelectronic
partsofthesystemwhenevertheignitionswitchisin
the START or ON positions. These include all of the
itemslistedaboveexceptthekneebolster,theinstru-
mentpanel,andthesteeringwheelandcolumn.Ifthe
keyisintheLOCKposition,intheACCposition,or
notintheignition,theairbagsarenotonandwillnot
inflate.
Ignoringthe“AirbagWarningLight”inyourinstru-
mentpanelcouldmeanyouwon’thavetheairbags
to protect you in a collision. If the light does not
comeon,staysonafteryoustartthevehicle,orifit
comes on as you drive, have the airbag system
checkedrightaway.
