The Driver and Passenger Airbag/Inflator Units are
locatedinthecenterofthesteeringwheelandtheright
sideoftheinstrumentpanel.WhentheORCdetectsa
collision requiring the airbags, it signals the inflator
units.Alargequantityofnontoxicgasisgeneratedto
inflatethefrontairbags.Differentairbaginflationrates
arepossible,basedoncollisionseverityandoccupant
size.Thesteeringwheelhubtrimcoverandtheupper
right side of the instrument panel separate and fold
outofthewayasthebagsinflatetotheirfullsize.The
bagsfullyinflateinabout50–70milliseconds.Thisis
abouthalfofthetimeittakestoblinkyoureyes.The
bagsthenquicklydeflatewhilehelpingtorestrainthe
driverandfrontpassenger.

collisions. When the ORC (with side impact option)
detectsacollisionrequiringthesidecurtainairbagto
inflate,itsignalstheinflatorsonthecrashsideofthe
vehicle. A quantity of nontoxic gas is generated to
inflate the side curtain airbag. The inflating side cur-
tain airbag pushes the outside edge of the headliner
out of the way and covers the window. The airbag
inflatesinabout30milliseconds(aboutonequarterof
thetimeittakestoblinkyoureyes)withenoughforce
toinjureyouifyouarenotbeltedandseatedproperly,
or if items are positioned in the area where the side

curtainairbaginflates.Thisespeciallyappliestochil-
dren.Thesidecurtainairbagisonlyabout31⁄2inches
Thedriverfrontairbaggasisventedthroughthevent
holes in the sides of the airbag. The passenger front
airbaggasisventedthroughtheventholesinthesides
oftheairbag.Inthisway,theairbagsdonotinterfere
withyourcontrolofthevehicle.
