andatmosphericconditions.
Thosebandscoverthesefrequen-
cies:
AMband:530to1,710kHz
FMband:87.7to107.9MHz
Aradiostation’ssignalgetsweaker
asyougetfartherawayfromits
transmitter.Ifyouarelisteningtoan
AMstation,youwillnoticethesound
volumebecomingweaker,andthe
stationdriftinginandout.Ifyouare
listeningtoanFMstation,youwill
seethestereoindicatorflickeringoff
andonasthesignalweakens.
RadiostationsontheAMbandare
assignedfrequenciesatleast10kHz
apart(530,540,550).Stationsonthe
FMbandareassignedfrequenciesat
least0.2MHzapart(87.9,88.1,88.3).
Drivingverynearthetransmitterof
astationthatisbroadcastingona
frequencyclosetothefrequencyof
thestationyouarelisteningtocan
alsoaffect yourradio’sreception.
Youmaytemporarilyhearboth
stations,orhearonlythestationyou
arecloseto.
Stationsmustusetheseexact
frequencies.Itisfairlycommonfor
Eventually,thestereoindicatorwill
stationstoround-offthefrequencyin gooffandthesoundwillfade
theiradvertising,soyourradiocould
displayafrequencyof100.9even
thoughtheannouncermayidentify
thestationas‘‘FM101.’’
completelyasyougetoutofrangeof
thestation’ssignal.
