Duringafrontalcrash,yourseatbelt
restrainsyourlowerbodyandtorso,
andthefrontairbaghelpsprotect
yourheadandchest.
Althoughbothairbagsnormally
inflatewithinasplitsecondofeach
other,itispossibleforonlyone
airbagtodeploy.
Thiscanhappeniftheseverityofa
collisionisatthemargin,or
threshold,thatdetermineswhether
ornottheairbagswilldeploy.In
suchcases,theseatbeltwillprovide
sufficientprotection,andthe
supplementalprotectionofferedby
theairbagwouldbeminimal.
Ifyoueverhaveamoderateto
severefrontalcollision,sensorswill
detectthevehicle’srapid
deceleration.
Afterinflating,thefrontairbags
immediatelydeflate,sotheywon’t
interferewiththedriver’svisibility,
ortheabilitytosteeroroperate
othercontrols.
Iftherateofdecelerationishigh
enough,thecontrolunitwillinflate
thedriver’sandfrontpassenger’s
airbags,atthetimeandwiththe
forceneeded.
Onlythedriver’sairbagwilldeployif
thereisnopassengerinthefront
seat,oriftheadvancedairbag
systemhasturnedthepassenger’s
airbagoff(seepage32).
Thetotaltimeforinflationand
deflationisone-tenthofasecond,so
fastthatmostoccupantsarenot
awarethattheairbagsdeployeduntil
theyseethemlyingintheirlaps.
