9.Starttheengine,andsetthe
interiortemperaturetomaximum.
Addcoolanttotheradiatorupto
thebaseofthefillerneck.Ifyou
donothavethepropercoolant
mixtureavailable,youcanadd
plainwater.Remembertohave
thecoolingsystemdrainedand
refilledwiththepropermixtureas
soonasyoucan.
Removing the radiator cap
while the engine is hot can
cause the coolant to spray out,
seriously scalding you.
Always let the engine and
radiator cool down before
removing the radiator cap.

checkthecoolantlevelinthe
radiatorreservetank(seepage

46).Addcoolantifthelevelis
10.Puttheradiatorcapbackon
tightly.Runtheengine,andcheck
thetemperaturegauge.Ifitgoes
backtotheredmark,theengine
needsrepair(seeEmergency
Towingonpage333).

8.Usingglovesoralargeheavy
cloth,turntheradiatorcap
counterclockwise,withoutpushing
down,tothefirststop.Afterthe
pressurereleases,pushdownon
thecap,andturnituntilitcomes
off.
.Iftherewasnocoolantinthe
reservetank,youmayneedtoadd
coolanttotheradiator.Letthe
enginecooldownuntilthereading
reachesthemiddleofthe
temperaturegaugeorlower
beforecheckingtheradiator.
11.Ifthetemperaturestaysnormal,
checkthecoolantlevelinthe
radiatorreservetank.Ifithas
gonedown,addcoolanttothe
MAXmark.Putthecapbackon
tightly.
