Theanti-lockbrakesystem(ABS)
helpspreventthewheelsfrom
lockingup,andhelpsyouretain
steeringcontrolbypumpingthe
brakesrapidly,muchfasterthana
personcandoit.
ABSactivates.However,youmay
feeltheABSactivateimmediatelyif
youaretryingtostoponsnoworice.
Thehydraulicsystemthatoperates
thebrakeshastwoseparatecircuits.
Eachcircuitworksdiagonallyacross
thevehicle(theleft-frontbrakeis
connectedwiththeright-rearbrake,
etc.).Ifonecircuitshoulddevelopa
problem,youwillstillhavebraking
attwowheels.
ABSIndicator
Ifthisindicatorcomeson,theanti-
lockfunctionofthebrakingsystem
hasshutdown.Thebrakesstillwork
likeaconventionalsystem,but
withoutanti-lock.Youshouldhave
yourdealerinspectyourvehicleas
soonaspossible.
Theelectronicbrakedistribution
(EBD)system,whichispartofthe
ABS,alsobalancesthefront-to-rear
brakingdistributionaccordingto
vehicleloading.
BrakePadWearIndicators
Ifthebrakepadsneedreplacing,you
willhearadistinctive,metallic
screechingsoundwhenyouapply
thebrakepedal.Ifyoudonothave
thebrakepadsreplaced,theywill
screechallthetime.Itisnormalfor
thebrakestooccasionallysquealor
squeakwhenyouapplythem.
Youshouldneverpumpthebrakepedal.
LettheABSworkforyoubyalways
keepingfirm,steadypressureonthe
brakepedal.Thisissometimes
IftheABSindicatorcomesonwhile
driving,testthebrakesasshownon
page326.
