inflatingfrontairbagcanstrikethe
childwithenoughforcetokillor
veryseriouslyinjureasmallchild.
Frontairbagshavebeendesignedto
helpprotectadultsinamoderateto
severefrontalcollision.Todothis,
thepassenger’sfrontairbagisquite
large,anditcaninflatewithenough
forcetocauseveryseriousinjuries.
TheNationalHighwayTrafficSafety
AdministrationandTransport
Canadarecommendthatallchildren
aged12andunderbeproperly
restrainedinabackseat.Some
stateshavelawsrestrictingwhere
childrenmayride.
Eventhoughyourvehiclehasan
advancedfrontairbagsystemthat
automaticallyturnsthepassenger’s
frontairbagoffundercertain
circumstances(seepage32),please
followtheseguidelines:
LargerChildren
Childrenwhohaveoutgrownchild
seatsarealsoatriskofbeinginjured
orkilledbyaninflating passenger’s
frontairbag.Wheneverpossible,
largerchildrenshouldsitintheback
seat,onaboosterseatifneeded,and
beproperlyrestrainedwithaseat
belt.(Seepage48forimportant
informationaboutprotectinglarger
children.)
Childrenwhorideinbackareless
likelytobeinjuredbystriking
interiorvehiclepartsduringa
collisionorhardbraking.Also,
childrencannotbeinjuredbyan
inflatingfrontairbagwhentheyride
intheback.
Infants
Neverputarear-facingchildseatin
thefrontseatofavehicleequipped
withapassenger’sfrontairbag. If
theairbaginflates,itcanhittheback
ofthechildseatwithenoughforce
tokillorveryseriouslyinjurean
infant.
